In the rapidly evolving landscape of the 21st century, two global challenges stand at the forefront: the Digital Divide and the Climate Crisis. While they may seem like separate issues, they are deeply interconnected. To truly empower the 3.1 billion people still living in the "usage gap" and those who have network coverage but aren't online, we must solve the hurdles of energy access and device affordability sustainably.

The GSMA has stepped up to bridge this gap with the launch of the Innovation Fund for Green Transition for Mobile. This initiative is a call to arms for startups and SMEs to pioneer solutions that foster a "twin transition" digital inclusion powered by green energy.

The Dual Mission: Inclusion and Sustainability

For many in low- and middle-income countries, the barrier to the digital world isn't just a lack of signal; it’s the lack of a reliable way to charge a phone or the high cost of a handset. The GSMA Innovation Fund is specifically looking for innovators who can turn these obstacles into opportunities for green growth.

The fund focuses on two critical pillars:

1. Accelerating Clean Energy Access

A smartphone is only as powerful as the electricity that charges it. In regions where the power grid is unreliable or non-existent, mobile technology can be the catalyst for clean energy. The fund supports:

  • Smart Solar Solutions: Using mobile connectivity to manage and pay for solar home systems.

  • Green Telecom Infrastructure: Solutions that use renewable energy to power towers and simultaneously provide excess power to local communities.

  • Energy Efficiency: Digital tools that optimize energy consumption across the mobile value chain.

2. Handset Circularity and Affordability

The traditional linear economy, like take, make, dispose, is the primary driver of e-waste. To make devices more accessible and eco-friendly, the fund is championing "circular" models:

  • Refurbishment & Repair: Extending the lifecycle of mobile devices to reduce waste and lower costs for consumers.

  • Device-as-a-Service: Innovative leasing or pay-as-you-go models that make smartphones affordable for low-income households.

  • E-waste Recovery: Scalable systems for the collection and responsible recycling of old technology.

Why Apply? More Than Just a Grant

Selected organizations will receive more than just financial backing. The GSMA Innovation Fund offers a comprehensive support package to help "de-risk" and scale your innovation:

  • Equity-Free Funding: Grants ranging from £100,000 to £200,000 to test or scale your solution.

  • Technical Expertise: Direct access to GSMA’s mobile for development experts.

  • Strategic Networking: Opportunities to build partnerships with Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and global investors.

  • Global Visibility: A platform to showcase your impact at major industry events like MWC (Mobile World Congress).

Are You the Next Green Innovator?

The fund is open to for-profit startups and SMEs operating in Africa, Central and South America, and South and Southeast Asia. The ideal candidate:

  • Leverages mobile technology (including AI and IoT) as a core part of their solution.

  • Demonstrates a clear social and environmental impact.

  • Has a commercially viable business model with a path to scale.

  • Prioritizes gender diversity, particularly in leadership roles.

Join the Transition

The green transition is not just about protecting the environment; it’s about building a more resilient, inclusive digital economy for everyone. If your business is at the intersection of mobile tech and sustainability, this is your chance to take your impact to the next level.
