In a historic moment for global climate action, the UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) is heading deep into the lungs of the Earth, the Amazon rainforest. From November 10 to 21, 2025, the city of Belém, Brazil will host world leaders, negotiators, scientists, activists, and journalists for what is shaping up to be one of the most pivotal climate summits of our time.

This year’s COP30 isn’t just about policy; it’s about presence. It’s about holding the world accountable in a place that has long symbolized both Earth's resilience and its vulnerability.

Why Belém?

Belém sits at the edge of the Amazon, a region whose future is deeply tied to the planet’s survival. Hosting COP30 here is both a political statement and a call to conscience. It brings climate negotiations closer to the very ecosystems at risk—and gives a platform to Indigenous communities, conservationists, and Southern Hemisphere voices too often sidelined in global discourse.

For Africa, this is more than symbolic. With shared struggles around deforestation, biodiversity, climate migration, and green financing, Belém represents an opportunity to connect our climate realities with global priorities.

Why Africa Should Pay Attention

Africa, responsible for less than 4% of global emissions but suffering some of its harshest impacts, must continue to shape global climate conversations. From the Sahel to the Seychelles, we have stories and solutions that matter.

Whether through official delegations, journalists, entrepreneurs, or grassroots voices, Africa’s presence in Belém is not optional; it’s essential.
