Is your research team based in a low- or middle-income country? Are you passionate about how environmental shifts impact human rights and health? The World Health Organization (WHO), in partnership with HRP (the Special Programme of Research in Human Reproduction), has launched a vital new call for research proposals.

This initiative, the Climate and SRH Research Grant, is offering up to $55,000 for community-based projects that investigate how climate change affects sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).

Climate change is not just an environmental crisis; it’s a health and human rights crisis. Extreme weather events—like floods, droughts, and heatwaves—often disrupt healthcare systems and exacerbate existing inequalities. This grant aims to generate "community-centered" evidence to help policymakers create better National Adaptation Plans.

Key Research Focus Areas

Applicants must choose one of the following four priority outcome areas:

  1. Maternal Health: How do climate events affect pregnancy and newborn outcomes?

  2. Gender-Based Violence (GBV): The link between climate shocks and increased violence or reduced support services.

  3. Contraception: Investigating disruptions in supply chains and access to family planning.

  4. Abortion Care: Understanding barriers to safe care in climate-affected settings.

What’s Included in the Grant?

  • Funding: Up to USD 55,000 per project.

  • Capacity Building: Selected teams will attend a Protocol Development Workshop in Geneva (July 2026). WHO will cover travel and housing for two members per team.

  • Institutional Support: Access to data analysis software, technical guidance, and the global WHO network.

Who Should Apply?

This call is specifically for research teams based in low- and middle-income countries. Eligible organizations include:

  • Academic and research institutions.

  • Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and CSOs.

  • Community-based organizations.

Preferred Team Dynamics: The WHO is looking for interdisciplinary teams that include early-career researchers and women in leadership roles. Your proposal should demonstrate a "mixed-methods" approach, combining hard data with qualitative community stories.

  • Application Deadline: 12 April 2026 (23:59 GMT+1)

  • Selection Announcement: 11 May 2026

  • Geneva Workshop: July 2026

  • Data Collection Phase: December 2026 – May 2027

How to Apply

Proposals can be submitted in English, French, or Spanish. You will need to provide a detailed budget, CVs of key team members, and a clear plan for how your research will involve the local community as "co-researchers" rather than just subjects.
