For the millions of smallholder farmers, transporters, and micro-entrepreneurs across sub-Saharan Africa and India, the "Green Transition" isn't just a global buzzword—it's a survival strategy. However, the biggest barrier to adopting clean energy isn't a lack of will; it’s a lack of affordable financing.

To bridge this gap, the Shell Foundation and Accion, in partnership with BFA Global and Upaya Social Ventures, have officially opened applications for the second cohort of the ClimaFii Alliance.

What is the ClimaFii Alliance?

Launched in January 2025, the Climate and Finance Innovations (ClimaFii) Alliance is a multi-sector initiative designed to accelerate the adoption of emission-reducing technologies. By providing catalytic funding and technical assistance, the program helps startups and SMEs scale solutions that were previously out of reach for low-income communities.

The Mission: Income-First Sustainability

"The green transition works when it raises people’s incomes," says Jonathan Berman, CEO of Shell Foundation. This philosophy sits at the heart of Cohort 2. The Alliance isn't just looking for "green tech"; it is looking for Productive Use of Energy (PUE) solutions that help a business grow.

Focus areas for applicants include:

  • Renewable Agri-Processing: Clean energy for milling, drying, and cooling.

  • Electric Mobility: E-bikes, e-rickshaws, and battery-swapping innovations.

  • Cold-Chain Systems: Solar-powered refrigeration for farmers and vendors.

  • Bioenergy: Innovative use of alternative energy sources.

  • Financing Models: New ways for banks and microfinance institutions to lend for clean tech.

Why You Should Apply

If you are a climate enterprise operating in sub-Saharan Africa or India, joining the ClimaFii Alliance offers more than just funding. You gain:

  1. Technical Expertise: Specialized venture building from BFA Global and Upaya.

  2. Financial Partnerships: Accion works directly with financial service providers to design products that make your technology affordable for the end user.

  3. Strategic Connections: Access to a network of global investors and development partners like the UK’s Transforming Energy Access (TEA) platform.

Join the Movement

The first cohort of 20 companies is already proving that clean energy can drive resilient prosperity. As climate shocks like extreme heat and flooding become more frequent, the urgency to equip small businesses with sustainable tools has never been higher.

Are you ready to scale?

  • Who: Startups and SMEs in Sub-Saharan Africa and India.
