The landscape of global journalism is shifting, with increasing recognition that narratives must be rooted in diverse local contexts rather than traditional Western-centric frameworks. To champion this evolution, the Al Jazeera Media Institute (AJMI) offers a prestigious fellowship designed to empower researchers and journalists from the Global South, including Africa, to redefine media practices.

This opportunity is not just a chance for professional development; it’s an invitation to join the critical effort of enriching journalistic content and shaping the future of media worldwide.

What is the Al Jazeera Fellowship?

The Al Jazeera Fellowship is a highly selective three-month program aimed at contributing to high-quality, innovative journalism, particularly by encouraging research tailored to the unique challenges and opportunities in the Global South.

Key Objectives of the Fellowship:

  • Develop High-Quality Journalism: Focus on adapting journalistic practices to modern technologies and local needs.

  • Encourage Innovation and Research: Foster authentic, original research that fills gaps in current media studies.

  • Enrich Global South Content: Support narratives that challenge unidirectional data flows and position Southern voices centrally in global discourse.

  • Immersive Experience: Provide fellows with practical experience within the dynamic work culture of the Al Jazeera Media Network (AJMN).

The Three-Month Journey: Blending Research with Practice

The fellowship is structured in two powerful phases:

  1. Phase 1 (Remote): Fellows begin by developing and submitting a detailed research plan and introduction for their 7,000-word paper. This phase ensures the research project is robust and well-defined.

  2. Phase 2 (AJMN Headquarters): Researchers travel to the Al Jazeera Media Network Headquarters to continue their work. Here, they are immersed in the newsroom, meeting editors, journalists, and staff relevant to their project, allowing for unparalleled practical insights and access to AJMN's journalistic practices.

Is This Opportunity For You?

The Al Jazeera Fellowship is designed for committed professionals ready to contribute deep, scholarly work that has practical implications for the news industry.

Eligibility Snapshot (for English-speaking applicants from non-Arab countries):

  • Experience: At least four years of professional experience as a full-time journalist or researcher in media or social sciences. Freelancers are welcome!

  • Education: A minimum of a Bachelor's degree.

  • Skills: Strong research, writing, and fluent academic English writing skills.

The Critical Topics Redefining Global Media

The AJMI Fellowship seeks proposals on cutting-edge subjects, offering a chance to influence the global media conversation. Priority topics include:

  • Journalism and the Global South: Redefining practices beyond Western models; examining the impact of colonial history and globalization on media, and analyzing the role of Southern narratives in shaping global discourse.

  • Digital Journalism: The evolution of storytelling from traditional to digital; the integration of AI in newsrooms; fact-checking; and the intersection of technology in investigative and data journalism.

  • New Schools in Journalism: Exploring emerging trends like anthropological journalism, slow journalism, and the intersection between journalism and the humanities.

  • Media Institutions and Challenges: Developing sustainable business models, building digital transformation strategies, and addressing challenges facing independent media platforms.

Application Details

The application window for English-speaking applicants to the Al Jazeera Fellowship Programme typically opens around the 4th of November and closes on the 4th of December 2025.

Key Application Requirement: Applicants must submit an original research proposal (1000–1500 words) that demonstrates how their work will fill a gap in existing knowledge and directly benefit journalists and the Al Jazeera Media Network.

This is a profound opportunity for African journalists and scholars to leverage the resources of a global network to research, innovate, and ensure the continent's stories are told with authenticity, depth, and global relevance. The time for the Global South to lead the narrative is now.
